Differences Between Red Wines Pinot Noir and Syrah

Red Wines Pinot Noir and Syrah, Slovenia

Red wines Pinot Noir and Syrah are among the most popular drinks that people enjoy. It is even said to be the most popular alcoholic beverage in the world, and for good reason – it simply tastes good! And the world would be a much less fun place without red wine

If you enjoy a glass of red wine, but are perhaps a wine novice and do not know much about the different varieties, let us start by answering your question: what’s the difference between two popular red wine varieties you can find at Sanctum Winery, Pinot Noir and Syrah (also known as Shiraz)?

Main differences between Pinot Noir and Syrah

Syrah and Pinot Noir are both wines with distinct characteristics. To help you decide which wine best suits your taste, we would like to explain the main differences between the two wines.

COLOUR: The Pinot Noir has a lighter colour, an earthy flavour and a medium to low tannin density. The Syrah wine has a deep colour, is spicy and fruity with firm tannins that give structure to the wine.

AGEING: Syrah benefits from its ageing. Wine lovers prefer the wine to be aged for at least a year (although some prefer to drink Syrah young). Pinot Noir, on the other hand, does not need to be aged and is best drunk young.

FLAVOURS: Syrah has aromas of dark berries like blackberries and black currants. Pinot Noir, on the other hand, has fruity tastes of cherries, raspberries and plums.

What are the similarities between Pinot Noir and Syrah?

Pinot Noir and Syrah are both light-bodied wines that balance out heavier foods, such as those that may be eaten during the Christmas season

Both wines are good choices for the holiday season because they have hints of spice such as cinnamon and cloves.

Both wines pair well with dark chocolate. Pinot Noir and Syrah are not considered dessert wines, but they go perfectly with a dark chocolate mousse.
